You’ll leave our program with a foundation for a wide variety of jobs in digital media, including in filmmaking, television, motion design, and visual effects. Media Studies is an intercollegiate major offered jointly by Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona and Scripps Colleges, together forming Intercollegiate Media Studies (IMS). ![]() You’ll complete a mix of individual and collaborative projects designed to develop conceptual and technical film and media making skills. The BA in Media Studies combines three areas of content focus. You will: learn to research and write for. This MA combines both theory and practice. You’ll learn how to write, direct, film, edit, color grade, composite and design sound. The media studies BA program’s curriculum is structured to ensure that students are continually challenged both creatively and academically, and is integrated with NYFA’s liberal arts and sciences curriculum to offer a well-rounded education within a challenging field of study. We focus on fast-changing developments in journalism and media studies. The Visual Media Option is a practice-based sequence of courses designed to develop skills applicable to narrative and documentary films, commercials, branded video and animation. Our BA inMedia Studies offers an in-depth approach to the study of film, television, popular music and digital media.Our curriculum highlightsthe cultural and aesthetic importance of media and introduces students to critical methods of media analysis. Our research examines the complex ways in which traditional and emerging media shape and are shaped by wider society, and the social and psychological processes people use to give meaning to media and media messages. The major itself also offers a research methods course (MediaSt 130), several elective courses, and a year-long honors thesis program (MS H194 and MS H195). Students learn to analyze the effects of electronic and print media, to consider the impact of the media on public policy, as well as the impact of public policy on the media. In our core courses, students learn media history and theory, and examine the role of media in political life in the United States and abroad. You will develop your creative media production skills in camera, sound, editing and writing your digital skills in photoshop, illustrator and adobe programmes and. Our core faculty earned their doctorate degrees in areas such as Communication/Media Studies and Feminist Cultural Studies, while affiliated faculty come from a variety of disciplines, bringing the perspectives and methods of their fields to bear on the analysis of the mass media. Based at the National Film School, IADT, New Media Studies examines ways to create and better understand visual and written communication in a digital culture.
